Western Abenaki Baskets by Bill and Sherry Gould

Sherry and Bill Gould live in Warner, NH. They celebrate their Abenaki heritage and love making beautiful baskets.

Sherry studied Abenaki fancy baskets with master artist Jeanie Brink of Barre, VT through a grant from the New Hampshire Arts Council Folk Arts apprenticeship program.

Together Sherry and Bill studied utilitarian Abenaki basket making with master artist Newt Washburn of Bethlehem, NH.

Their baskets start in the traditional Abenaki manner, with Bill harvesting a Brown Ash tree, pounding the strips, and preparing them for Sherry to weave.

Together, Bill and Sherry harvest aromatic sweetgrass that is woven into their baskets. Store baskets with sweetgrass out of direct light to preserve its color and scent.
